While we all dream of spreading our work on acres of space, in many cases this is simply not practical and a smaller desk will have to be considered. If you are really strapped for space it is worthwhile buying a table which can be used for working or studying during the day and be used for entertaining in the evening. If you have the space for two small tables, buy identical models. In this way your work will be undisturbed with no need to pack away the laptop each evening and you will also have a space to eat meals comfortably or to use for art or sewing projects. When entertaining, the two tables can be pushed together to provide enough space for all to sit comfortably. Square or rectangular tables work better in this case than two round ones, making maximum use of limited space.
If space allows a small desk with drawers will contain your work and study necessities within easy reach and ensure a tidy, clutter-free environment. A shelf placed on the wall above the desk will hold bulkier files, reference books and printing supplies. Another space-saving idea is a small bookcase which complements the style of the desk and upon which a small printer can be placed, with plenty of room on the shelves below for miscellaneous items. A strategically placed mirror can transform the desk into a dressing-table and your cosmetics and creams will fit nicely into the drawers.
There are many dedicated computer desks on the market which are attractive and inexpensive. These are cleverly designed to be compact yet provide sufficient space for a computer and accessories and a printer. A small computer desk can be used for several other applications, such as a storage space for a small music system or portable TV.
A table or small desk beside the bed will provide enough height for a reading lamp to cast sufficient light to comfortably read by as well as neatly containing your reading material and perhaps a clock radio which comfortably fulfils two functions.
Another very useful place for a computer desk is in the kitchen. The extra shelving takes up very little space, yet makes a convenient place to stack a few pots, dishes, cutlery trays and condiments. The large shelf can be used as a preparation area, tidied up and transformed into a dining table for one.
With many styles in a variety of materials on the market and small desk or table can be put to innumerable uses and, even when you graduate to a larger space or a larger desk, you will find a use for the old one, even if it only holds an array of leafy pot plants.
